Info Given

The sundial is designed for the location of the Perak State Observatory Complex. The complex is presently used to observe the lunar crescent by the officials of the state Mufti Department. Plans are underway to extend the complex to include facilities for observation, teaching and accommodation.

The sundial has to be leveled and kris kepit aligned to true north prior to use. 

The point of the kepit’s shadow would indicate time and date.

The information given in the sundial are described below with reference to the numbers in above picture. Muslim prayer times are indicated by green lines. 

  1. Apparent Time at the Malaysian time zone meridian of 120 degrees east (UTC+8) is marked from 0900 to 1700hrs. Markings are given for every 5 mins, 30 mins and hourly. Equation of Time have to be added to time shown in order to obtain Malaysian Standard Time.
  2. 2.75hrs after start of Fajr (true dawn) prayer time.
  3. 2 hrs after sunrise
  4. Dzuhur prayer time. Sun transit local meridian.
  5. Asr prayer time
  6.  2 hrs to Maghrib (sunset) prayer time
  7. 2,75 hrs to Isha (Astronomical twilight) prayer time
